Article: Ground Water Level Falls Rapidly in Dhaka

Water level in Dhaka city and its suburban areas is falling rapidly due to massive extraction of underground water by Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority ( WASA)through hundreds of deep tube wells daily for the growing population.

Ignoring the warning of environment and soil science experts, Dhaka WASA has continued to extract the underground water, resulting in the fall of water level by 24 meters till 1996 from the acceptable level, The Bangladesh Observer reported here Wednesday.

The water level will drop by 36 meters by the year 2010 if the extraction continues at the existing rate, soil scientists said.
