Article: Nikkei Index Plunges to 15-Week Closing Low in Tokyo

The benchmark Nikkei index plunged to a 15-week closing low in Tokyo Friday, hit by a selling spree relating to next Monday's reshuffle of the index's components.

The Nikkei Stock Average of 225 selected issues on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange declined 706.64 points, or 3. 73 percent, from Thursday's close to end at 18,252.68, the lowest closing since January 7.

The broader-based Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) which covers all First Section issues, however, rose 5.12 points, or 0.31 percent, to 1,634.12.

The key index opened higher, helped by an upturn in high-priced information and technology issues, but plunged rapidly in the afternoon, traders said.
