Article: Nikkei Index Closes Below 18,000 in Tokyo TOKYO, April 28

The benchmark Nikkei index on the Tokyo Stock Exchange closed below 18,000 Friday for the first timein six months. The Nikkei Stock Average of 225 selected issues on the First Section lost 45.47 points, or 0.25 percent, from Thursday's close to end at 17,973.70. The broader-based Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) which covers all First Section issues, however, added 4.65 points, or 0.28 percent, to 1,648.87. Turnover on the major section increased to 612.95 million shares from Thursday's 542.32 million shares.
