Article: UNHCR Concerned over Detaining of Refugees by Zambia

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)'s regional office in Lusaka Tuesday expressed concern about the fact that Zambia has detained a large number of refugees in the past few weeks on a charge of residing in the capital city of Lusaka without being authorized.

UNHCR representative Oluseyi Bajulaiye told a press conference here Tuesday that the on-going verification exercise conducted by Zambia's immigration authorities has led to anxiety among refugees in Lusaka.

Answering questions he said that he could not say exactly how many refugees have been detained but said he believed there are hundreds.
