Article: Condemns Arrest of Turkish Cypriot Journalists

The Cyprus government Tuesday condemned the "illegal arrest" of Turkish Cypriot journalists by the breakaway Turkish Cypriot regime as an attempt to muzzle the press.

According to Greek Cypriot media, four journalists of the Turkish Cypriot newspaper "Avrupa" and two other persons in the Turkish Cypriot area have been arrested on charges of spying against the Turkish Cypriot regime and Turkish troops.

Acting government spokesman Spyros Arotis said the arrest of the journalists was aimed at muzzling and abolishing the right of freedom of the press and terrorizing the people in northern Cyprus.
