Article: Leaders Sign Draft Treaty of African Union

African leaders attending the closing ceremony of the 36th annual summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) signed here on Wednesday the draft treaty on the establishment of a closer African Union, taking a decisive step towards integration.

The leaders urged all member states of the OAU to take the necessary measures for its ratification as soon as possible in order to ensure its speedy implementation.

The Draft Constitutional Act of the African Union will enter into force after two-thirds of the OAU's 53 member states ratify it.

The African Union will replace the OAU, which was established on May 25, 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, one year after the document
