Article: New Plant Varieties Under Protection in China

The violation of right to grow new varieties of plants, like corn, has been paid much attention to in China with around 15 cases taken to court now, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Chinese Government had received 252 applications for protecting new plant varieties by March 15 this year since it started this work in April 1999, which included applications from a Japanese company and Dutch company.

The first 38 applications were approved in April last year, the Ministry source said.

China has launched the regulations on the protection of new plant varieties, a kind of intellectual properties like brands and patents, in 1997.
