Article: German President, Chancellor Disagree on Gene Research

A heated debate is being held in Germany on whether there should be limits in gene research.

President Johannes Rau called for restrictions on gene and biotechnology research in Germany during a speech last Friday.

In the annual "Berlin Address," the president warned against putting economic or medical benefits above moral considerations in developing gene technology.

"Economic developments are legitimate and important, but they cannot outweigh human dignity and the protection of life," Rau said.
