Article: Egyptian President Urges African Nations to Join Free Trade Area~#$%

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday called on all member states of the Common Market of Easternand Southern Africa (COMESA) to join a free trade area (FTA) which took effect last October.

Addressing the opening session of the sixth COMESA summit, Mubarak said that it is necessary for COMESA member states to join the FTA, so as to deal with the international changes and maximize inter-group trade in a manner that "enhances development efforts, open new markets and redouble volume of production."

During the two-day summit, leaders were expected to discuss waysof expanding trade and economic cooperation among member states.
