Article: Brazil Confirms Three New Cases of Foot-and-mouth Disease

The Brazilian government confirmed on Monday three new cases of foot-and-mouth disease in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Two of the latest outbreaks occurred in the southeastern town of Rio Grande while the third was diagnosed further west in Quarai, near the border with Uruguay, the state's agriculture department said.

It was Brazil's 14th foot-and-mouth outbreak in the past three weeks. Authorities have started a massive vaccination campaign to protect the state's 13-million-head herd, besides slaughtering 608 infected cattle in recent weeks, with 208 more to be culled in the next few days.
