In China, table tennis sits at the heart of the nation's sporting
culture. Xinhua sportswriter Cao Jianjie provides an insider's view
of why ten of millions of Chinese are so entranced by the sport.
In table tennis-crazy China, you are excused for not knowing
Michael Jordan, Carl Lewis or any other household names of sports in
the rest of the world. Only the admission on your ignorance of Rong
Guotuan, Guo Yuehua, Deng Yaping or Liu Guoliang invites a laughter,
or even a grunt of disbelief.
I invited an American friend and his daughter Alice to watch the
women's table tennis World Cup in Shanghai in 1996, the annual
event which featured world top 16 players.
