The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' (UNHCR)
official said on Thursday that ensurance from the Pakistani
government of not deporting newly arrived Afghan refugees was being
sought by the UNHCR in an effort that those who have fled war and
drought from within Afghanistan could receive due protection and
assistance.
Addressing a press conference here in the Pearl Continental
Hotel, Mr. Jacques Franquin, head of UNHCR's emergency team in
Peshawar, said, as a surveyed number of at least 65,000 Afghans
sofar had slipped into Peshawar, the capital of Northwest Frontier
