MOSCOW, November 19 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. does not seek a long-
term military presence in Afghanistan or Central Asia, and enjoys
close positions with Russia on the makeup of a future Afghan
government, U.S. Ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow said
hereMonday.
The U.S. is not striving for a long-term military presence in
Afghanistan and other Central Asian states, and is unlikely to
create its own army bases in Central Asian countries. Washington has
clearly stated this to Moscow, Vershbow told a news conferencehere.
He stressed that the ongoing military presence in Afghanistan is
part of the plan to ensure stability in the country.
