MABTON - From the moment you walk in, you can tell there's a lot
more than homework going on at Mabton's Community Learning Center.
And not just for kids.
The federally funded learning center - an after-school and
evening program that offers tutoring, arts and crafts, and a host of
other activities - is for parents and other grownups, too. The idea
is to boost educational interest and community involvement by
fostering academic and social skills.
The program started last August, when the Mabton School District
became one of hundreds of school districts nationwide to receive a
21st Century Community Learning Center Grant. The U.S. Department of
