WATERVILLE, Wash. (AP) - The Western sage grouse's numbers in
Washington state are in decline, but the federal government says
there isn't enough money to protect the species right away.
The grouse, found in Douglas, Yakima and Kittitas counties, will
be placed on a waiting list for protection as a threatened species
under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
said this week.
There are 236 species on the waiting list, some of which are in
more urgent need of protection, the agency said.
"At the pace we are going through the list right now, it could
take several years before anything happens with the sage grouse,"
said Chris Warren, a Fish and Wildlife Service ...
