NEWS SERVICE REPORTS
BOSTON - During the last two-plus seasons, Jason Varitek had
begun to establish himself as one of the American League's top
defensive catchers.
But the Boston Red Sox are going to have to do without the hard-
nosed Varitek for at least two to three months because of a
fractured right elbow, according to team physician Bill Morgan. A
Red Sox spokesman said that was a conservative estimate, which
raises the question of whether Varitek will be able to return at all
this season.
Varitek suffered a fracture of the radial head of his right elbow
while making an outstanding diving grab of a fouled bunt attempt by
Detroit's Shane Halter on Thursday night.
