Article: Training to Teach English -- As a Second Language

SUNNYSIDE - Nearly one in four students in the Sunnyside School District needs help in English.

But only 3 percent of the district's teachers are state certified to teach them English as a second language.

Sunnyside Superintendent Rick Cole wants that changed. He wants one in four teachers trained to teach English to non-native speakers.

In September, teachers here and in Grandview will get that training.

The two school districts are teaming up with Gonzaga University to offer Teaching English as a Second Language training to 30 teachers this fall and next spring. It's the first time the Jesuit university in Spokane has offered the graduate program to the two districts.
