Not since John F. Kennedy was a Massachusetts senator has there
been sport fishing for spring chinook salmon on the Yakima River.
That may change, and soon.
Washington Fish and Wildlife Director Jeff Koenings is reviewing
a proposal to open a limited test fishery of spring chinook, likely
in the upper Yakima River, as early as this weekend.
A final decision could come as early as today on a recommendation
Koenings requested from fisheries biologists and managers in the
Yakima regional office.
The possibility of a spring chinook fishery, the first in at
least 40 years, stems from the highest return run of spring chinook
