Daily training begins as the clock hands hit 4:05. Two rows of dedicated students, clad in pure white uniforms, stand before the instructor and bow.

The instructor, standing cool and confident, gives a command for beginning exercises. In unison, they start with head movement from front to back, then side to side, followed by shoulder spins, body stretches, leg stretches to knee circles, and finally a set of 25 push-ups. Now warmed up, their hearts pumping and blood flowing, the actual lesson begins.

The instructor stands firm, and issues the first exercise: blocks. He then says a Korean command (pronounced "jim-bee"), and the white-suited trainees begin in a walking stance. ...
