A plan to improve water flow in the Yakima River to benefit
federally protected fish by withdrawing irrigation water instead
from the Columbia River is making its way through Congress.
On Wednesday, the U.S. House approved Rep. Doc Hastings' bill
authorizing the federal Bureau of Reclamation to conduct feasibility
and engineering studies on the Kennewick Irrigation District
project.
The Senate Energy Committee approved similar legislation from
Sen. Slade Gorton, R-Wash.
"We need to have this happen because steelhead and bull trout
have been listed as endangered in the mid-Columbia region," said
Chuck Garner, general manager of the irrigation district.
