Article: State's on the Hook for Salmon Runs -- What's Affected? Everything on Yakima River

A declining run of summer steelhead in the Yakima River and six other migratory fish populations in Washington state are expected to receive federal protection today.

The National Marine Fisheries Service will list Mid-Columbia steelhead, which includes the Yakima run, as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act.

The listing will force changes in the way people live and work in the Yakima Valley, from fishermen to irrigators, developers, and the guy out washing his car, said Keith Wolf, regional fisheries program manager for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
