A Sunnyside attorney who serves as that city's public defender is
the county's newest District Court commissioner.
Don Engel, 39, was selected recently from among eight finalists
for the position. He said Wednesday he expects to assume his duties
Feb. 1.
Engel fills the post left vacant by former Commissioner Ruth
Reukauf's election to the District Court bench in November.
The court commissioner position pays an annual salary of $72,060.
Engel said one of his career goals has been to serve as a judge.
"I've always had some interest in being a judge. A court
commissioner does most of the same things as a judge, so this is a
step in that direction," he said.
