OLYMPIA (AP) - Merchant Marines who served in the 16 months
immediately after World War II are a step closer to getting the
recognition they want for service to their country.
A Senate panel on Tuesday voted unanimously to pass a bill that
would revise the definition of a World War II Merchant Marine
veteran to be consistent with a federal definition established last
November.
Specifically, the bill would extend the service cutoff date for
Merchant Marine veterans' status from Aug. 15, 1945 - the end of the
armed conflict of World War II - to Dec. 31, 1946 - the date
proclaimed as the official end of World War II by President Truman.
