Article: Cherish, Protect Chenin Blanc Before It's Too Late

Chenin blanc is about to switch places with the American Bald Eagle. Although this particular eagle still warrants a great deal of protection, it is no longer endangered. It has made a great comeback throughout the land, with nesting pairs popping up as fast as Starbucks outlets. But not chenin blanc. No one seems to care.

Even I will admit to once calling this type of wine "acidic slime." But that was 1980 and things have changed.

Mike Conway of Latah Creek made some of the fruitiest, well- balanced chenins ever from local fruit, and others have followed. Kiona and Chateau Ste. Michelle have been making standards year in and year out, yet no one seems to care.
