Article: Mayors Object to Rotating District Court -- Letter contends proposed assignments would change duties of Judge George Colby

There is again discord over District Court in Yakima County.

This time, the issue is the assignment of cases to the four judges on a rotating basis, which means that Judge George Colby of Toppenish won't always hear Lower Valley cases. He would be assigned cases from south of Union Gap only four months out of the year under a plan prepared by presiding Judge Rod Fitch.

Yakima Valley mayors, in a letter released Friday, contend the system amounts to a change in Colby's duties without amending the plan that outlines how District Court will operate in Yakima County.

Fitch disagreed with that assessment Monday, saying the other judges have rotated cases among themselves for years.
