Ruth Klepach knew it was a long shot. That her efforts were
likely to earn a terse thanks-but-sorry form letter, a letter that
would close with the faint, rubber-stamp signature of best-selling
fantasy author Terry Brooks.
Still, it was a disappointment she was willing to risk in the
hope she could convince the Seattle-based writer, then finishing up
his novelization of "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace," to
chat - if only for a few moments - with her teen-age son, Scott, an
aspiring fantasy writer and avid Brooks fan.
The Yakima woman told Brooks about her boy's poetry and
unfinished fantasy novel, which she and her husband, Scott Sr., were
reading as fast as their reluctant son ...
