Granny Smith Release Date Set for Monday
YAKIMA - The general release date for the Granny Smith variety of
apples is Monday, according to an analysis of fruit maturity factors
by an industry subcommittee.
The release date represents a decision that the majority of the
Granny Smith crop has reached adequate maturity for good eating
quality, said the release date subcommittee of the Washington State
Horticultural Association.
Shippers do not need a special maturity certificate from the
state Agriculture Department to ship Granny Smith apples to market
beginning Monday.
Unlike Red Delicious and Golden Delicious, maturity for the tart
Granny Smith variety is not based on sugar content. A starch ...
