A food-safety education project that dramatically reduced the
incidence of salmonella food-poisoning in Yakima County has
received the first national Dannon Institute Award for Excellence in
Community Nutrition.
The Abuela Project, a multiagency campaign led by Washington
State University Cooperative Extension, will receive $5,000 to
expand the program.
The campaign, launched in mid-1997, responded to a growing number
of salmonella food-poisonings in the Hispanic community linked to a
homemade cheese made with unpasteurized milk.
