Central Washington hunters can look forward to a deer-hunting season that should be better than last year, but according to Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife officials there are still not going to be a lot of legal bucks out there during the nine- day season that begins Saturday.

The local mule deer population is still trying to recover from the hard winter of 1996-97 when an estimated 70 percent of the herd was lost due to starvation because of the deep snows and harsh elements.
