Central Washington hunters can look forward to a deer-hunting
season that should be better than last year, but according to
Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife officials there are
still not going to be a lot of legal bucks out there during the nine-
day season that begins Saturday.
The local mule deer population is still trying to recover from
the hard winter of 1996-97 when an estimated 70 percent of the herd
was lost due to starvation because of the deep snows and harsh
elements.
"We've seen some decent recovery," said Roger McKeel, DFW Region
