Article: County, city threaten to cut visitors bureau funds

Officials for Kanawha County and the city of Charleston are threatening to cut funding for the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau unless the bureau opens its records.

Officials for the bureau say they have nothing to hide. Charleston City Councilman Dave Hardy, chairman of council's finance committee, said the visitors bureau has an annual budget of about $659,000 - $610,000 of it from taxpayers. The city provides nearly $500,000 a year in tax money to the visitors bureau. But Hardy said city and county officials can't get detailed information about how the bureau spends the money.
