Bowlers in "The Alex," a three-month-long bowling tournament at
the Boulevard Recreation Center in Charleston, will vie for $10,000
in guaranteed prize money now through June 27.
The tournament is named for Alex Schoenbaum, the late founder of
the Shoney's restaurant chain.
"It's a memorial to Alex Schoenbaum. His father started the
bowling center, and we thought it would be appropriate to name it in
his honor," said Gary Simms, operator of the Boulevard Recreation
Center.
The tournament is open to any five-member bowling team that wants
to enter. The entry fee is $100 per team.
"Anybody can get together and bowl," Simms said. The tournament
