Dave Parker, who gained fame as a Charleston Charlie by bolting
the team in 1973, will join in the 50th anniversary celebration of
Watt Powell Park June 19.
A Cincinnati native and a 17-year major-league veteran, Parker
will sign autographs and throw out the first ball for the Alley
Cats'
game against the Macon Braves at 7:15 p.m.
Parker played in 84 games and batted 317 as a Charleston
outfielder in 1973 but left the team when the Pittsburgh Pirates,
the
Charlies' parent club, refused to promote him to the majors.
The Pirates eventually relented, and he played in 54 games and
batted 288 in Pittsburgh that year, launching a career in which he
played for the Pirates, Reds, ...
