Federal prosecutors hope to recoup some of the $870,000 scammed by
a Boone County man from sick coal miners by auctioning off sports
cars, trucks and other loot bought by the local "fraudster."
The Friday morning public auction will feature a variety of items
Paul David Adkins bought for himself, relatives and friends with ill-
gotten cash.
Posing as a licensed respiratory therapist and known as "Dr.
Paul," Adkins operated an Ottowa clinic called Mountain Diagnostic
Respiratory Services Inc. He submitted scores of false billings to
the federal Black Lung health care program between April 1995 and
January.
Adkins, 39, pleaded guilty to 15 federal wire fraud and theft-
related felony charges ...
