More than 40 years ago, American Business Club member Tom Corrie
remembers carrying a scale model of an "ugly" building with him to
various civic organizations in Charleston.
The homely structure, he told his audiences, was to be built on
Charleston's Magic Island.
"It was the ugliest damn thing you ever saw. I carried it all
over town to any group that would listen to me at a meeting.
Everybody would say, 'That's terrible; you're not going to build
that thing, are you?' But it generated a lot of interest in the
thing," Corrie said.
The "thing" was the Charleston Civic Center, and the American
Business Club was among its earliest boosters.
