Growing up in Dunbar, Gerald "Moe" Townson's early introduction to the game of football wasn't always a pleasant experience.

"When I was in grade school, my brother Jack would play football with me in the house," he said. "He would make me be Hoppy Shores. He was seven years older than me and he would kill me."

Shores was a speedy all-state halfback for Stonewall Jackson in the early 1950s who was difficult to bring down. But, then, he wasn't competing against players seven years older.

"He made me be Hoppy Shores because Stonewall and Dunbar were big rivals," Townson said with a smile while relaxing in his office under the stands at Laidley Field.
