Article: Council sound system squawks its last

The message came through loud and clear: Charleston City Council members are happy that the much-maligned sound system in council chambers has squawked its last.

"I think that's grounds for celebration," said Councilman Dave Hardy.

Ever since its installation about 15 years ago, the sound system has prompted complaints from nearly everyone who attends a council meeting.

The system cuts in and out and often fails to magnify speakers' voices enough to be heard in the cavernous chambers.

About halfway through Monday's council meeting, a cacophony of static came from the speakers. The system had to be shut off, and Mayor Jay Goldman ran the rest of the meeting without it.
