Jerry "Moe" Townson has resigned as head football coach at Capital High School after four seasons. He is expected to be replaced by one of his assistant coaches, Jack Woolwine. "Jerry gave me his [resignation] letter earlier in the week," Capital principal John Clendenen said on Thursday. "I will have to advertise the position, but I would like to keep it in-house and I know Mr. Woolwine will apply for the job."

Townson compiled a 34-14 record at Capital, including a 5-5 finish this past season. Twice he led the Cougars as far as the semifinal round of the Class AAA playoffs, in both 1998 and '99.

The decision, Townson said, came down to what's right for Capital.
