Karen Garrett is a loyal customer of the Smith Street Kroger. She
doesn't own a car and the store is the only one within walking
distance of her Spring Hill apartment.
In the next couple of weeks, she'll need to find a new place to
shop.
On Monday, Kroger officials announced that they will close the
Smith Street store on June 9 because it hasn't made money for the
past four years.
On Monday afternoon, Garrett and her friend Jermica Scott walked
down the hill from their Roseberry Circle apartments. They loaded
two shopping carts with food, wheeled them to a parking lot across
the street and waited for a "gypsy cab" driver.
Gypsy cabs often cruise past Smith Street Kroger ...
