Of the Kansas City Royals' six farm clubs, only the Alley Cats of
the Class A South Atlantic League failed to make the playoffs last
season. In light of the Royals' emphasis on minor-league
development over the pursuit of high-priced free agents, the Alley
Cats were the black sheep in an otherwise successful season.
The Royals' overall success in the minors, particularly the
outstanding play of the Spokane Indians, bodes well for Charleston,
which will open its season in Columbus, Ga., April 6 and play its
home opener on Friday, April 14 against Cape Fear.
