SAN FRANCISCO - A federal judge clamped a two-week freeze
Thursday on the Hearst Corp.'s purchase of the San Francisco
Chronicle and said he was concerned that San Francisco may become a
one-newspaper city. Hours after the Justice Department approved the
$660 million sale, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker said a private
antitrust suit had raised doubts about the survival of Hearst's 120-
year-old San Francisco Examiner after the Chronicle changes hands.
He issued a temporary restraining order blocking the Chronicle
sale.
Hearst is buying the Chronicle and selling the Examiner to owners
of a free newspaper. Hearst said it agreed to subsidize the new
owners with $66 million over three years ...
