COUNTRY music is fraught with ironies, none more potent or complicated than the legacy of Hiram Hank Williams (or simply "Hank Sr."), who died, drunk, in the back seat of a Cadillac on New Year's Day 1953 near Oak Hill. By the time Waylon Jennings wrote "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" in the 1970s, Hank Sr. was an icon, worshipped by country purists and even academics, who sometimes called him "the hillbilly Shakespeare."
