Article: Sleaze big threat to Labour in council elections

LABOUR could be facing serious local council losses in the West of Scotland in May's elections if it cannot end the public squabbling and allegations of sleaze. Even Labour's vice-like grip on South Lanarkshire could be at risk.

When the last local elections were held four years ago, John Major was at the depth of his unpopularity and, in a result that presaged the party's subsequent general election wipe-out, the Tories were left without control of a single council. Labour in contrast put in one of its best local election performances ever, winning 616 of the 1,161 seats at stake.
