LABOUR could be facing serious local council losses in the West
of
Scotland in May's elections if it cannot end the public squabbling
and allegations of sleaze. Even Labour's vice-like grip on South
Lanarkshire could be at risk.
When the last local elections were held four years ago, John
Major
was at the depth of his unpopularity and, in a result that presaged
the party's subsequent general election wipe-out, the Tories were
left without control of a single council. Labour in contrast put in
one of its best local election performances ever, winning 616 of the
1,161 seats at stake.
On May 6 those gains have to be defended from the vulnerability
of
