Article: No room for complacency as we prepare for euro invasion

THE euro, which will be worth around 70p, will be used throughout Europe from January 1999 and will affect British businesses even though the UK is not in the first wave of 11 countries which have agreed to European Monetary Union (Emu).

The euro will be introduced in 11 European member States on January 1: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. From this date exchange rates between currencies will be fixed. The currencies involved will become denominations of the euro.
