DIET pills which many doctors have stopped prescribing because of
a wide range of side effects are readily available from commercial
slimming clinics, Scotland On Sunday can reveal.
National Slimming Centres clinics in Glasgow and Edinburgh last
week prescribed Duromine, a brand name appetite suppressant, to a
reporter making his first visit in each case.
The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) says the pills should only
be prescribed to those whose weight threatens their health and who
have failed to lose weight in any other way. The college also
recommends that patients should first pursue lifestyle changes that
could lead to weight loss for at least three months before taking a
