PICTURE Stanley Baxter as a stern-faced tank commander, pointing
the way ahead as caterpillar tracks claw their way up and over a
slope that turns out to be an exaggerated road hump in a city
street.
The ubiquity of humps as traffic control devices, and their
swelling size, inspired the idea. A steel-helmeted Baxter in a tank
turret would have become a 30-second sketch in one of his trademark
comedy revue shows that used to dominate the Christmas and New Year
viewing schedules.
It is never going to happen though, because Baxter has been
retired these past nine years and has no intention of changing his
