THE six-year lull in Mafia violence has brought a false sense of
security to the streets of the Sicilian capital. But the five shots
that killed Domenico Geraci on October 6 drowned out even the
Palermo
rush hour. Geraci, a trade unionist and mayoral candidate, was shot
in the back of the head in front of his son as he arrived home in
Caccamo, a small town about 38 miles east of Palermo.
The late anti-Mafia judge Giovanni Falcone liked to refer to
Caccamo as "the Mafia's Switzerland". Geraci's killing was the first
murder in the town in 20 years. It was also the first political
assassination in Sicily since the killing of Salvo Lima, the MEP,
and
the ambush of Falcone and his colleague ...
