THE six-year lull in Mafia violence has brought a false sense of security to the streets of the Sicilian capital. But the five shots that killed Domenico Geraci on October 6 drowned out even the Palermo rush hour. Geraci, a trade unionist and mayoral candidate, was shot in the back of the head in front of his son as he arrived home in Caccamo, a small town about 38 miles east of Palermo.

The late anti-Mafia judge Giovanni Falcone liked to refer to Caccamo as "the Mafia's Switzerland". Geraci's killing was the first murder in the town in 20 years.
