Article: Tribute to aviation's `elder statesman'

One of the aviation industry's most prestigious awards has been presented to retired Golden Bay aviator John Reid, MBE. He received the Jean Batten Memorial Award at a private function in Nelson, after he was unable to travel to London to collect it at a special Guild Hall function. Tracy Neal reports.

It was 1943, and pilot training in Canada took on a whole new meaning for aviator John Reid.

Mr Reid, who founded Helicopters (NZ) Ltd, was told by a student he was "unsuitable as an instructor, and even as a pilot''.
