Life takes strange twists and turns, and seldom is this more true
than in the case of commercial fisherman Eric Walton Amedro, 88, who
lived alone in a one-room shack north of Kaikoura for 15 years.
There was not another human being living on his stretch of shore
at Waipapa Bay.
Eric is the youngest son of a convicted American bootlegger. He
never saw his father again after his fourth birthday.
Yet Eric himself is so honest and good-hearted that since just
before Christmas he has given away $208,000 to Blenheim charities.
The Salvation Army got the biggest single amount of about $40,000.
He likes ``the Sallies'' because they fed him with hot tinned food
and hot soup when he was on the march ...
