Carpets in some Nelson homes are going under the microscope as part of a nationwide asthma research project.

Dust mites, hiding in carpets and other fabrics in the home, are linked to asthma and allergic diseases.

The research project aims to get an overall picture of the dust problem in New Zealand houses. Fifteen hundred homes from Kaitaia to Christchurch, and including Nelson, have been sent kits to gather dust from their carpets by the Wellington Asthma Research Group. The homeowners have to collect a sample of dust from either their carpet or floorboards by vacuuming the area and then sending it to Wellington where it will be analysed.
