Article: Farmers surprised by 12c milk payout

Tasman Milk Products' payout for the 1997-98 season is better than expected but there is still plenty of room for improvement, say farming leaders.

Federated Farmers Nelson-Golden Bay dairy section chairman Evan Baigent said while the payout of 12c/kg was slightly better than anticipated, a lot of farmers viewed this season with apprehension and were budgeting ``very conservatively''.

Unless there was a ``vast improvement'' in the payout and Tasman's performance, it was quite likely some farmers would sell their milk to other companies, he said.

Golden Bay farmer John Vlaming, a former section chairman, said the payout was a ``bit of a surprise''.
